There was a quarrel between a husband and wife: The husband said, "I am the Nawab of this city. People respect me because of me, and your respect is because of me." The wife said, "Your respect is because of me. If I want, I can ruin your respect in a minute, and I can also make it." The Nawab was taken aback. The Nawab said, "Fine, show me how you can ruin my respect."
The matter was resolved. In the evening, there was a gathering at the Nawab's house with his friends... Everyone was laughing and joking when suddenly the Nawab heard his son crying loudly, and his wife scolding him badly. The Nawab shouted, asking his wife, "Begum, what happened? Why are you scolding our son?"
The Begum whispered, "Look, your son is demanding khichdi, even after eating a full meal."
The Nawab said, "Give him a little more." The Begum replied, "There are other people in the house too. How can I give it all to him?"
The whole gathering became silent. People started whispering, wondering what kind of Nawab he was, that there would be a fight in his house over a simple khichdi. The Nawab's prestige was tarnished. Everyone quietly got up and left, disturbed by the situation.
The Nawab went to his Begum and said, "I accept that you have tarnished my respect today. People were saying all kinds of things. Now, bring back that respect."
The Begum said, "What's the big deal? Invite those people who were present at the gathering today, by making some excuse."
Just like that, the Nawab called everyone for a meeting, under the pretext of having fun and enjoying. All the friends were sitting. Laughter and jokes were going on when the same cry of the Nawab's son was heard again. The Nawab shouted, "Begum, what happened? Why is our son crying again?" The Begum replied, "He is insisting on having khichdi again." People started looking at each other, thinking that for a simple khichdi, there is a fight in this Nawab's house every day.
The Nawab smiled and said, "Alright, Begum, do one thing. Bring the khichdi here. We will give it to our son with our own hands. He will agree, and we'll also serve khichdi to all the guests."
The Begum replied, "Yes, Nawab Sahab."
The Begum went to the dining area, where a servant was bringing the food on his head. He kept the platter down and started serving the guests along with their son.
All the Nawab's friends were surprised. The dish being served was not ordinary khichdi. It was a delicious delicacy made by mixing dates, pistachios, cashews, almonds, raisins, etc.
Now, people were thinking to themselves, "Is this khichdi? If they call this khichdi at the Nawab's house, what will they call a rich dessert?"
The Nawab's prestige skyrocketed. People started talking about the lavishness of the Nawab.
The Nawab went to his Begum, folded his hands, and said, "I have realized that a woman in the house can both create and ruin respect with her actions. And a person who does not earn respect at home will not find respect anywhere in the world."
This principle applies everywhere in life.
